Counselling for Reasonable Needs

We all have the right to have our reasonable needs met.

We have the right to respect for our views, opinions, beliefs and values. If others hold different views, opinions, beliefs and values that is their prerogative. All should be treated with equal respect.

We have the right to our feelings, and to change the way we feel about something if we choose to do so. No-one else has the right to tell us how we feel or how to feel.

We have the right to say ‘No’. We are not obliged to agree to constant requests for favours or to agree to anything that is detrimental to our reasonable needs. Other people’s needs are of equal importance but not more important.

We have the right to have our private time and private space respected. Other people’s time and space is of equal importance – not more important.

We have the right to be treated with equality.

We have the right to neither seek nor give validation unless we choose to do so. We do not need validation for our views, opinions, beliefs and values and neither are we obliged to give validation for views, opinions, beliefs and values that we do not necessarily agree with.

We have the right seek clarification for what we don’t understand, without feeling ‘silly’ or ‘small’ in any way. There is no such thing as a ‘stupid question’.

We have the right to make mistakes. We are human and prone to getting it wrong from time to time.

We have the right to seek knowledge and have our own education and professional goals. There are those that for reasons of their own would wish to sabotage your journey (See controlling relationships)
